Gold holds a strong place in every indian house. It plays a vital role in our lives; we Indians buy it when the baby is born, from weddings to gifts for our loved ones on their special day and mainly for savings and investments. It gives a supporting hand during our tough times.
Gold through Generation
We even pass the jewel for generation. I wore my (Rengaya) great-grandmother’s bangle on my wedding, and that was my most favourite jewel I ever had.
But, one day I thought, whether the jewels I have are pure?
My Renagay’s bangle will look a little old. If my mother sees this article, she will definitely kill me. Okay, coming to the point, how can I trust the jewel they brought in their 60s is pure?
That was tough, right?
We need to go directly to any of the reputed shops to check now.
But in our generation, we need not worry, we can check whether the gold we are buying is pure are not before paying the bill.
In this guide, I will teach you “How to check whether your gold is 100% pure or not?”
What is the HUID Code?
The HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification code, introduced by The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a government body July 1, 2021, and it is made mandatory by April 1, 2023.
This HUID system is introduced to stop fake or impure gold. It has a 6 alphanumeric code; no two jewels have the exact matching numbers. It’s like an Aadhar card, eg, S2F4C7.
Now we will decode what do other hallmark symbols on the gold mean.
- BIS Logo
The BIS Logo is a tiny triangle-shaped mark that means the gold jewellery is certified by the government, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
- Purity Mark
This one indicates how pure your gold is, for eg, 916 – 22k Gold.
- Hallmark centre mark
The Hallmark centre mark indicates where the gold is tested and certified
- Jweller ID Mark
Jeweller ID mark means which jeweller made or sold the jewel.
These methods are very difficult for most people to understand. It is the tradition method; the marks are difficult for everyone to understand. So to make the gold buying trustworthy, the government introduced the HUID code, which we can verify via the BIS Care app.
What is the BIS Care app?
The Bureau of Indian Standards launched the BIS Care app to check whether ur gold is pure or not.
I will clearly explain to you how to use this app.
We will go step by step now, I will take one of my bangles and will attach the screenshots of the results too for your reference. Try along with me; grab any of your jewels too.
Results from BIS Care app
Step 1: First, Download the BIS Care app on your phone.
Step 2: On the app homepage, we can able to see ‘verify HUID”
Step 3: Next, Enter HUID number
Step 4: Now search for the result. This app will show you the main details of your jewellery, including:
- Jeweller Registration number
- Assaying and hallmarking centre (AHC)
- AHC Recognition number
- AHC Address
- Jwell Type
- Date of Hallmarking
- Purity/Fineness
If the code is valid, the information shown on the app should exactly match the jewellery.
If the code is incorrect, this app will show that your code is invalid.
The BIS app gives me peace of mind whenever I go to buy gold. We just need to find the HUID Code on the jewellery. If you find it difficult to see the details, ask the jeweller to show it or use your phone camera, zoom and check. I used to check through my phone always.
Try now with your jewel in the home or with a ring on your hand. I will attach some pictures to help you find the HUID code.
Even with all these strict rules, some sellers still cheat us. We can easily find out by these red flags.
- The code is invalid on the BIS Care app.
- The app details don’t match the jewellery, eg, if you type the code on your bangle and the app shows you the jewel type is a ring.
- The seller uses and tells you that verification is not necessary.
- The hallmark looks very poorly engraved, incomplete or scratched.
If you find any of these resflags don’t buy, tell them the HUID code is not matched, or just tell me, I will come and buy on another day.
You can report the issue to BIS about the fake jewellery
On the homepage of the BIS care app, you can see queries and compliant, and you can raise a complaint there.
There is also contact information on the BIS Official site. You can straight away contact them by phone. BIS will take strict action against fraud.
If the seller and BIS don’t give support, no worries, I will tell you what to do next.
- Keep all the purchase bills and the HUID invalid code screenshot safely from your side.
- Contact the Consumer Court and submit the case with a detailed explanation about what happened from the start.
Don’t be afraid to take action against fraud; your boldness will save you and many others.
Advantages of Hallmarked Jewellery
The main advantages of buying Hallmarked Jewellery are
- The HUID Hallmarked gold is easily traceable, as the details are recorded in the database, and we can track it anytime.
- No hidden impurities, we will pay for the exact pure gold we buy
- Bank and pawnbrokers prefer hallmarked jewellery; you can get more resale value and higher loan value compared to non-hallmarked jewellery.
Conclusion
Finally, my opinion is HUID secures our gold from fraud, Using the BIS Care app, we can easily check whether the gold is pure or impure within a second.
All you need to do is take extra time in the jewellery shop to verify the hallmark. We are paying our lifetime savings money, so we deserve pure gold.
